Keiran a toddler of two years old, was playing outside his house. When suddenly the neighbour’s dog savaged him. Keiran’s grandfather heard screams and raced outside to rescue his grandson. He managed to pull Keiron on to his shoulders but the dog was still jumping up and bit him several times. Keiron is seriously injured, his ear and nose are ripped off, one eye was hanging out, he has holes in his face and more. He was airlifted to the hospital, where doctors performed seven hours of emergency reconstructive surgery and placed him in an induced coma. The owner of the dog held the parents responsible and says that parents should look after their children 24 hours a day. The dog is destroyed.
When I read this article I almost cried, this is a horrible story. I cannot imagine what the little boy, parents and grandparents must be going through. Keiron’s health is still in danger and he will be maimed for the rest of his life. The reaction of the dog’s owner is astonishing, he should be ashamed of himself. His dog is not normal, it is a killer and he made it this way. Some people must not be allowed to have animals, it makes me angry. I really hope the little boy recovers and that the doctors can reconstruct his faces. I need 200 more words to express my opinion.

Too young to have IVF: 24-year-old Andrea Heywood fights for her right to fertility treatment
Nursery nurse planning to sue her local primary care trust for age discrimination
4 June 2012
Andrea Heywood is a 24–year-old nurse, who is infertile because she suffered severe scarring to her fallopian tubes when her appendix burst at the age of six. She is trying to get pregnant, since she was married three years ago. She was told, she could get pregnant through IVF, but they have been turned down three times for a free round of fertility treatment worth £5,000. They were told they must wait until she is 30 before she gets free IVF treatment. Now they want to sue the local primary care trust for age discrimination, because they say she is too young and therefore denied IVF treatment.
I think that she is being discriminated because the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines state women should be offered three cycles of IVF from the age of 23 to 39 if it is clinically established they are unable to conceive by natural means. It is strange that the local funding guidelines in Portsmouth depart from NICE and therefore they are not eligible for free treatment. She is a young and healthy woman and has the optimum age to have a child. It is also a logical step to want a child when you are married and that has nothing to do with age.

A generation is growing up skewed by internet pornography, court hears, as 12-year-old who raped a schoolgirl is spared jail
1 June 2012
By watching pornography at a young age, children get a “skewed view” of sex. Like this twelve year old boy, who had unlimited access to adult internet sides. Thereby this young boy forced a nine-year-old girl to perform a sex act on him. The Judge gave him a warning, that he should not regard pornography as a “guide” on how to behave sexually, instead of sending him to jail. There is a political debate going on, as to whether the Government should force internet providers to adopt an “opt-in” system. This means parents would have to remove a default block on watching pornography on their home computers, thereby preventing their children to watch adult images.

It is very
sad that children have access to adult internet sides. Parents are responsible that
their children cannot watch this on the internet or the television. I think the
government should decide to adopt an “opt-in” system, to protect the children whose
parents do not block the internet themselves. This made me think, I have got
three children and I have secured my television but not the internet. Maybe it
is time to do this, but how? The boy in the article will be kept under
supervision, I think this is the right decision, because he is only fourteen
years old.

New guidelines warn Britons to
drastically reduce their boozing. But is a life without liquor worth living?
Hell no, says John Walsh

1 June 2012
Oxford
University did a research and recommended levels of alcohol consumption. British
people should adjust their daily alcohol intake. According to Oxford University
people should not drink more than half a unit per day. That's a quarter of a
pint of beer, or a third of a glass of wine. This adjustment could save 4,600
lives every year. According to the writer of the article, not many people will follow
this advice because life is going to be boring and that drinking in “units” is impossible.
The alcohol problem occurs in the age group 30- and 40- something. Young people
are more wise, there's been a 16 per cent decrease in the number of British
11-to-15-year-olds who have tried alcohol.
I think it is
great that young people are more sensible towards alcohol consumption, even
though they get bad examples from adults. The way these 30- and 40- some age
group behave, is ridiculous. The main rise in hospital admissions attributable
to alcohol, is due to this age group. The writer of the article acts as if people
cannot have fun without alcohol and that is pathetic. I think people are not happy with their life,
when they need alcohol to party or relax. I would be ashamed if it were my
parents.http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/alcohol-i-drink-therefore-i-am-7808343.html

Britain's obesity crisis: NHS spending £16m a year on 200 who are too fat to leave home
30 May 2012
Obesity is an epidemic in the UK, over half of all British people are now so fat they are considered overweight or obese. This costs the NHS more than £4billion a year. There are at least 200 people, who are so obese that it costs the NHS £16million a year for medical help. Some of the costs made are, four visits a day by health workers, fire fighters who had to spent eight hours to free a woman from her bedroom, teenager Georgia Davis who had to have an operation involving 40 emergency workers and expensive gastric bypasses. But the real figure is more than likely much higher because an unknown number are supported by the social care system rather than the clinics and hospitals who record weight data.
It is shocking to read that over half of the British people are getting so fat. They just do not care about their health and risking their life for food. I think it is terrible that it costs the society so much money because they cannot control themselves and get back into shape again. They should pay these expenses themselves maybe it will frighten them and think twice before stuffing themselves. Most of all I think it is terrible that young children are also getting obese. The parents should be ashamed of themselves for neglecting their children. They depend on their parents to be healthy.

Shock report: cuts to have a 'catastrophic' effect on child poverty
30 May 2012
In 2008 Labour had great success, they achieved on of the largest reduction in child poverty by providing tax credits, cash transfers and accessible public services. Britain did better in protecting children than many other rich countries. Unicef warns that the Coalition's cuts to tax credits and freeze on child benefit will reverse this progress. The number of children living in poverty will increase. The government are putting these children at risk, their health and education and eventually chances of employment. One solution the government is taking is extending the provision of 15 hours of free childcare each week.
I think it is great the Labour party had such a success in protecting children. It is awful that during this crisis the government decided to cut on child benefits. Children are vulnerable and must be protected. The government need to find other ways to economize. They also must not give the money to the parents directly because many of them misuse this money. There have to be other ways to get the children what they deserve, like free clothes and free school meals.

Women over 40 to get free fertility treatment as NHS lifts age limit (Speakers’ Corner)
19 May 20, 2012
The current guidance is that the NHS should not provide IVF to women over the age of 39. This age will be extended by three years following advice that suggests many women in their late 30s and early 40s could conceive after treatment. Now couples must have been trying unsuccessfully for a baby for three years before being considered for NHS treatment. With the new recommendations couples can have free IVF after two years. Apparently these changes have come to avoid the threat of being sued under new age discrimination laws.
Like the article says, women should start families in their late 20s or early 30s. Because children born to women over 40 are more likely to have abnormalities, and mothers are more likely to have problems during labour. Also nearly half of all these pregnancies result in miscarriage. The message the NHS sends out is wrong, women think they have time enough to have children, so they want to wait for Mr Perfect or make a career first. However nature does not agree and they cannot get pregnant and need IVF. This all causes a lot of disappointment, mental pain, divorces and it costs other people money.

David Cameron defends 'make up or break up' euro warning
17 May 2012
Greece’s
inability to form a government being able to carry out cuts, is not a secret
anymore after the last elections. The Eurozone is in crisis and everyone wants
to prevent the break-up of the Eurozone, because it affects all the countries
in Europe. It is important that the European union takes a decision, to either
help Greece or to lose them. If they wait too long to make a decision the
crisis will spread. In case this happens the National Security Council has made
contingency plans to safeguard Britain. Whatever happens with Greece, Britain
took steps to secure a stable economy and financial system.
The solution
to the crisis in Greece affects everyone. If Greece stays in the Eurozone it
will cost a lot of money again and we have to hope and trust they keep their
promise to economize. They have broken their promise before so there will be no
trust. If Greece steps out of the Eurozone, everybody will lose the money they
lend to Greece and Greece go into a deeper crisis. I think they must leave the
Eurozone because the people in Greece do not want to economize and expect us to
give them money. If they do not want to fight for their country, why should we.dinsdag 8 mei 2012
Blood for money? We need more of an incentive to donate
7 May 2012
http://blogs.independent.co.uk/2012/05/07/blood-for-money-we-need-more-of-an-incentive-to-donate/
This summer
with the Olympics and Diamond Jubilee ahead, the UK expects 1.2 million tourist
visiting this summer. Therefore the NHS called for help, because there are not
enough blood and plasma donors. The NHS says the stocks need to be 30 per cent
higher to be adequate for so many people. Only four per cent in the UK is a
donor and there is more need for donors. Campaigning is not enough to attract new
donors and therefore a discussion is going on whether people should be paid for
donating blood or plasma.
When people
donate blood or plasma it is out of kindness and this is the way it should be.
The article also talks about America where people get paid to donate. Most of
the donors are poor and sometimes homeless and to get the money they are not always
honest. Honesty is important for the health of the patients, because when
donors do not fill in the health form honesty the patient is at risk. That is
why I think donation of blood and plasma must not be paid. To avoid uncertainty
there also must be no other compensation whatsoever.http://blogs.independent.co.uk/2012/05/07/blood-for-money-we-need-more-of-an-incentive-to-donate/
Religious butchering now commonplace in Britain, leading vet claims
5 May 2012
According to English and European law, animals have to be stunned before they get slaughtered. Only in religious communities it is allowed to cut animals throats if the animals are not "unnecessary suffering." But nowadays a quarter of all the meat on the British market is killed according the non-stun Halal principle, while only three to four per cent is Muslim. This means that some slaughterhouses do not stun animals just to cut costs, rather than for religious reasons. This results in the fact that an estimate two millions animals die in significant pain and distress and this is unacceptable.
I think it is horrible how these animals must suffer before they die. These animals are helpless and cannot stand up for their rights. That is why it is the duty of the government to help animals not to suffer. The only way to solve this problem is to forbid slaughter without stunning. There must be no exceptions to this rule to prevent inaudibility. Therefore the people who are pro non-stun Halal slaughtering must be educated, then they maybe feel empathy for the animals. I think people who still do this are sadistic, criminal and deserved to be punished.

I hid camera and caught this care home thug beating up my mum
23 – 04 –
2012
Jane’s mother who 81 years old and has Alzheimer, always lived with her until she needed round-the-clock care. She had to move her mum to Ash Court, which was given an “excellent” rating by the Care Quality Commission. After a few weeks Jane noticed bruising on her mother’s arms and hands. She decided to install cameras which caught the abuse of her mother. She was shocked when she found out that the nurse stroke her mother six times. She also noticed that the workers never greeted or talked to her mother.
This does not only happens in the UK, it is a problem all over the world. It is awful how people who decide to work with older people treat them with no respect and even abuse them. When I read this I hope I never become a vulnerable old woman and never have to live in a home. I hope that homes are going to take more measures to resolve this problem because it still happens. Jane’s way to find out what happened with her mother is fantastic and I hope that the children pay extra attention when their parents live in a home. Because of Jane the abuser is caught and put in jail so he cannot hurt anybody anymore.

Locked in a coal bunker day and night: Boy, 10, imprisoned by his "barbaric" mum and dad
23 – 04 –
2012
A ten year old boy was locked up in a dark coal bunker for one year. He was only let out to go to school. He barely had any sunlight in this room, only a mattress and a potty. He had to sit in his room day and night while his parents watched television. The school noticed the situation and alarmed the police. Both parents are facing jail and the boy is in care. During the inquiry the blame was always put on the boy.
It is horrible how parent can lock their child in a coal bunker the size of a mattress with only a potty. They must be mentally sick to put the blame on the boy. No child can behave in a way to deserve this treatment. I am glad the school noticed his situation and informed the police. Although it took the school a year. I hope the parents go to jail for at least five years, this way they can experience what their son did. Why five years? Because times goes faster when you are older and the prison has more facilities then the boy did. Also boy is also vulnerable and cannot stand up for himselve.

Doctors turn on No 10 over failure to curb obesity surge

Research show that by 2030 almost 50% of the people in the UK will be obese. This will increase diseases and lead up to higher costs for the NHS (healthcare system). The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges demand the next measures to prevent this:
■ A ban on firms such as
McDonald's and Coca-Cola from sponsoring major sports events such as the
Olympics.
■ A safe area around schools where
fast-food outlets are not allowed.
■ A prohibition on the use of
celebrities or cartoon figures to sell unhealthy food and drink to children.
■ A legal obligation on all food
and drink manufacturers to publish on their products clear guidelines about the
amount of calories, sugar, fat and salt.
■ Consideration of "fat
taxes" similar to those being implemented in Scandinavia, designed to penalize
the buyers of food and drink high in salt, sugar and fat.
I am shocked to find out that around 50% of the people in
the UK will be obese in 2030. This will increase all kinds of diseases and
therefore the costs for healthcare. It is unfair for people who live healthy
and have to pay for the behavior of these people. In my opinion they also must take
the measure to let obese people pay more healthcare. Some measures which the
Academy of Medical Royal Colleges demand are good. Not only the big brands are responsible
for obesity, people themselves are also responsible for their own health. When
brands may not sponsor big events anymore there will be no events at all, that
is a real shame.

Anti-gay adverts pulled from bus campaign by Boris Johnson
15 April 2012
The mayor of London intervened to stop an advertisement just days before the posters would appear on London buses. The advertisement was booked by two conservative Anglican groups and the message on the posters says that gay people can be converted to heterosexuality. This campaign was a reaction to the gay rights group who are running an advertisement on London buses for their lobby for the extension of marriage to gay couples.

The Christian group told they went to the proper channels
for this advert and had been cleared to run it and think this is censorship.
Others say that the advert is cruel and can damage people who are struggling with
their sexuality.
I think it is a good decision that the mayor stopped the
advertisement of the Anglican organizations. Homosexuality is not a disease
that can be cured, in fact it is not a disease at all. It is an insult that people
still think this way, they are narrow minded and they do not adjust to modern
times. They feed other narrow minded people with hate, prejudice and
discriminate. They should use their energy for something positive like preventing
animal cruelty or pollution. I hope that people who are struggling with their
sexuality are protected by forbidding this advert.
